Is your Meta Business Manager restricted? Learn the most common reasons, how to appeal the restriction, and how to avoid future issues.

Introduction

You're about to launch a new campaign when suddenly a notification appears telling you that your Meta Business Manager has been restricted or disabled.

For many businesses, this comes as a shock. After all, your ad accounts, Facebook Pages, Instagram accounts, and in some cases even active advertising campaigns depend on your Meta Business Manager.

The good news is that not every restriction is permanent. In many cases, the issue can be resolved—as long as you take a structured approach.

Was your Meta Business Manager actually restricted?

Before taking any action, you should first identify which asset has actually been restricted.

Assets are the individual components that belong to your Meta Business Manager.

Meta distinguishes between several different assets, including:

  • Business Manager (Business Portfolio)

  • Personal Facebook profile

  • Ad account

  • Facebook Page

  • Instagram account

  • Personal advertising account

  • Payment account

These restrictions are often confused with one another. That's why troubleshooting should always begin by identifying which specific asset has actually been restricted.

Where can you see if something has been restricted?

Restrictions and account issues can be found in the Business Support Home.

Within Meta Business Manager, you can access it via All Tools → Business Support Home.

If you're not sure how to access your Meta Business Manager, you can find a step-by-step guide here.

Please note that restrictions affecting your personal Facebook profile are not displayed in Business Support Home.

To check whether your personal profile has been restricted from advertising, open Ads Manager. If your Facebook profile is restricted, the green "Create" button will be greyed out. Hovering over the button will display a message containing a link to the page with details about your restriction.

Why does Meta restrict Business Managers?

Meta rarely provides a specific reason for restricting a Business Manager. However, there are several common causes that occur repeatedly.

Unusual account activity

Adding new administrators, logging in from different countries, or making unusual changes to your accounts can trigger Meta's automated security checks.

Violations of Meta's Advertising Standards

If one of your campaigns violates Meta's Advertising Standards, it may result in restrictions on your ad account or, in more severe cases, your entire Business Manager.

Incomplete business information

Missing business details or an incomplete Business Verification process can also lead to account restrictions.

Payment issues

Declined credit cards, failed payments, or outstanding invoices are among the most common reasons for restrictions.

Poor account structure

Multiple personal profiles with administrative access, orphaned assets, or disorganized permissions can make it difficult for Meta to verify your business. Over time, this can increase the risk of restrictions and account-related issues.

What should you do if assets in your Business Manager have been restricted?

Before taking any action, keep the following recommendations in mind:

1. Stay calm

Many restrictions are simply temporary security reviews and are resolved without further action.

2. Read the notification carefully

Meta usually indicates which asset has been affected and whether additional information is required. Although these messages are often vague, they usually provide valuable clues about the issue.

3. Check your Account Quality

Visit the Account Quality section to see whether your account has policy violations, pending reviews, or other issues that need your attention.

4. Review your business information

Before submitting an appeal, make sure that:

  • All business information is complete and accurate.

  • Your Business Verification has been completed (if required).

  • Your administrators and permissions are set up correctly.

Once you've completed these checks, you generally have four options.

Submit an appeal

If you believe the restriction was applied by mistake, you can request a review through the Business Support Home, provided the 180-day appeal period has not expired.

Contact a Meta Business Partner

Certified Meta Business Partners have access to additional support channels for certain restriction cases.

Keep in mind that these services often cost several thousand euros, and there is no guarantee that your Business Manager will be restored.

If more than 180 days have passed since the restriction, the chances of a successful recovery are generally very low.

Seek legal assistance

Some law firms specializing in media or digital platform law offer legal support for Meta account restrictions.

Be aware that legal action can be expensive, and there is no guarantee of success. The outcome and timeframe depend on the specific circumstances of your case.

Use another Facebook profile

As a last resort, some businesses choose to use another Facebook profile to continue advertising.

If you take this approach, the profile must belong to a real person, as fake accounts violate Meta's policies.

Keep in mind that the new profile may also be required to complete Identity Verification.

While this option carries certain risks and should be considered carefully, it is sometimes the only practical solution available.

How can you prevent future Business Manager restrictions?

Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that your Meta Business Manager will never be restricted.

However, a well-structured account setup can significantly reduce the risk of future issues.

Best practices include:

A solid account structure not only improves security but also makes it easier for Meta to verify your business when needed.

My recommendation

Many businesses build their Meta Business Manager over several years. Employees leave, agencies receive access, new ad accounts are created, and additional assets are added over time.

As a result, many Business Managers become unnecessarily complex and difficult to manage, increasing the risk of account issues.

A professional Business Manager setup cannot guarantee that your account will never be restricted. However, it provides a solid foundation, improves security, and significantly reduces common sources of error.

Frequently Asked Questions about Meta Business Manager Restrictions

Can a restricted Meta Business Manager be restored?

Yes. Depending on the reason for the restriction, your Business Manager may be restored after a successful review or once the underlying issue has been resolved.

How long does a review take?

Review times vary significantly. Some requests are processed within a few hours, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I continue running ads while my Business Manager is restricted?

That depends on which asset has been affected. If only a single ad account has been restricted, you may still be able to advertise using other active ad accounts.

Can I completely prevent Business Manager restrictions?

No. Since many reviews are triggered automatically by Meta's security systems, there is no guarantee that restrictions can always be avoided. However, a professional Business Manager setup and a well-organized account structure can significantly reduce

common risk factors.

Why did my Business Portfolio invitation fail?

A failed Business Portfolio invitation is often caused by a restriction on your personal Facebook profile.

If your profile has been restricted from advertising, you won't be able to send or accept Business Portfolio invitations until the restriction has been resolved.
